In 1962, Picelj initiated a series of his self-published “Edition a” art booklets, having released a total of seven publications up until 1964. Each issue of “Edition a” featured the work of one artist —mostly of a colleague whose work he admired.

RECORD: Shot Sage Blue Marilyn (1964), sold at Christie’s in New York on May 9, 2022, for USD 195.04 million, setting a record as the most expensive work by an American artist ever sold at auction and the highest-priced work of 20th-century art ever sold at auction. The sale also had a philanthropic dimension: proceeds benefited the Thomas and Doris Ammann Foundation, which supports children through healthcare and educational programmes. The buyer was also given the opportunity to designate the cause to which the Foundation would allocate 20% of the sale proceeds.

The presented Portrait of Katie Jones by Andy Warhol belongs to the artist’s iconic series of portraits of celebrities and prominent figures, created using acrylic paint and silkscreen printing at his legendary New York Factory. Katie Jones, born Catherine Claire Schlumberger Jones, was a photographer, patron and art collector, and a member of Warhol’s close social circle. She came from a wealthy aristocratic family of French descent whose fortune was built in the oil industry.
