Lux Mentis is a study of the relationship between what is material and flawed, and what is perfect and elusive. The project forms part of Tomasz Koclęga’s broader investigations, focused on the relationship between form, perception, and the inner experience of the human being.
A dynamic figure, almost painful in its form, becomes the foundation for a luminous point – a golden sphere. The titular Light of the Mind symbolizes an idea born in hardship, yet one that ultimately illuminates and gives meaning to human existence. Gold, contrasting with the rawness of the metal, underscores the sacred nature of intellectual and spiritual triumph over matter.
Tomasz Koclęga (b. 1968) is an artist living in Poland, India, and China. He runs studios in Pławniowice and Jaipur. A graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków, he worked at the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice until 2023. He has also lectured at universities in Finland, the United States, and the Czech Republic. He works in figurative sculpture.
The artist is known for his monumental sculptures, which can be found in public spaces across three continents. He has presented his work at more than 40 art fairs, held over 50 solo exhibitions, and shown his work in more than 100 group exhibitions in Poland and abroad.
