Matthew Attard is an artist whose practice explores images as social and cultural constructs. Working within the framework of contemporary drawing, he adopts a multimedia approach that highlights the medium’s versatility, performative nature, and timeless relevance. Follow the Ship emerges from a multi-layered creative process that converges heritage, digital technology, and contemporary drawing notions.

Its starting point was a re-interpretation of historic ship murals etched into surfaces in Malta. To create the work, the artist used an eye-tracking device. Drawing in the air, he followed the contours of the compositions found on the city’s walls with his gaze. Based on the eye-tracking data, he generated digital, ever-changing visualizations.

One of Follow the Ship’s main objectives was to provoke contemplation on authorship and our modern dependence on digital technology while also prompting reflection on our unwavering trust in it.

Matthew Attard (b. 1987) is a Maltese visual artist. He first exhibited his work in a dual solo show at Galleria Michela Rizzo in Venice (2014). Since then, his art has been presented in venues across Venice, Rome, Valletta, Genoa, London, Beijing, and Los Angeles. In 2024 Attard represented Malta at the 60th Venice Biennale with the project I Will Follow the Ship.
