Bożenna Biskupska’s creative journey reflects a constant search for new forms of expression, evolving from figurative art and abstraction to developing her distinctive artistic language, most notably through her expansive, multi-layered series Delineating the Image.

Created in 1997, the series consists of seven monumental sculptures in which the artist presents the figure of the One-Legged Man – a character that serves as a central motif in her work. In her artistic practice, Biskupska develops a system of sculpture multiplication based on the number seven and experiments with delineating space through sculpture. The repeated, yet each time individual, figure of the One-Legged Man – resembling a deformed human form – raises questions about the boundaries between individuality and symbol. Simultaneously, the artist employs a variety of raw materials such as concrete and bronze, through which she explores new identities of reliefs.

Biskupska continues to develop a system of sculptural multiplication based on the number seven, using the figure as a tool for demarcating and ‘delineating’ space. Replicated yet always unique, this symbolic form has become a central motif in her practice.

Bożenna Biskupska (b. 1952) is an artist whose work spans painting, sculpture, installation, video and performance art. Central themes in Biskupska’s work include the passage of time, the claiming and shaping of space, and the act of delineation. Her personal artistic vocabulary revolves around line, mark and trace. Her work has been exhibited in cities including Venice, Padua, Washington D.C., Chicago, Berlin and Warsaw. Bożenna Biskupska’s pieces can be found in the collections of institutions such as the Museum of Art in Łódź, the National Museum in Gdańsk, and the International Monetary Fund in Washington D.C. Bożenna Biskupska represented Poland at the 41st Venice Biennale of Art in 1984.
