This year’s presentation of the collection at the TOP CHARITY Art focuses on the work of two distinctive voices from the Ghanaian art scene. Ibrahim Mahama and Rita Mawuena Benissan engage, in their own unique ways, with the traditions and history of Ghana, as well as with collective memory and shared experience. Mahama’s monumental installation Sika Asem, created for Zachęta – National Gallery of Art with the support of OmenaArt Foundation, enters into dialogue in the Orangery at Wilanów with the work of Benissan, a Ghanaian-American multidisciplinary artist who reinterprets traditional symbols of Asante culture in the context of contemporary art.
Complementing the presentation is the Asante Zone, featuring selected objects, symbols, and visual motifs originating from the Asante Kingdom – one of the most important cultures of West Africa. The display reveals the richness of its symbolism and craftsmanship, where every element – from kente cloth to Adinkra symbols – carries deep social and spiritual meaning.
The collection includes works by renowned artists such as El Anatsui, Ibrahim Mahama, Eddy Kamuanga Ilunga, Rita Mawuena Benissan, LR Vandy, Kwaku Yaro, Ndidi Dike, and Zanele Muholi. A portion of the collection was presented during the TOP CHARITY Art 2025 exhibition at the Orangery of the Palace in Wilanów. The showcase was accompanied by educational activities, including workshops and talks, that explored the history and global significance of African art.
This is a growing collection, aimed not only at presenting but also documenting contemporary artistic practices across Africa. Its mission is to foster intercultural dialogue and to amplify the international presence and recognition of artists from this region on the global art scene.
