In 1962, Picelj initiated a series of his self-published “Edition a” art booklets, having released a total of seven publications up until 1964. Each issue of “Edition a” featured the work of one artist —mostly of a colleague whose work he admired.

Biennale na Malcie

The exhibition concept was developed by Hanna Wróblewska and curated by Natalia Bradbury. The exhibition featured works by five women artists: Lia Dostlieva, Barbara Falender, Iza Jagiełło, Ida Karkoszka, and Aleksandra Karpowicz, who work in sculpture, photography, video, and installation. A shared commitment to activism and social engagement unites their art. Originating from Poland and Ukraine, these artists create across various European countries, including Spain and the United Kingdom. Their works address themes such as migration, transformation, and the consequences of socio-political change. Despite generational and artistic differences, the artists are united by a common narrative rooted in shared experiences. In 1973, Barbara Falender, with her sculptures „She” and „He,” deliberately pushed artistic boundaries in defiance of the oppressive system of communist Poland. Iza Jagiełło explores abstract boundaries imposed by patriarchy. Ukrainian artist Lia Dostlieva confronts historical trauma.

Aleksandra Karpowicz views the body as the only possible place of residence, while Ida Karkoszka’s work — created during a three-month artistic residency in Malta — explores the nurturing capabilities of mammalian bodies regardless of geography. Her monumental sculpture, “Mamma,” made from coral limestone (a stone unique to the island of Gozo), was placed at the entrance of Fort St Elmo in Valletta.

The exhibition “Other Geographies, Other Stories” challenges the founding myth of ancient Mediterranean civilizations — such as Malta’s — traditionally portrayed as male-dominated cultures born through violent conquest. Instead, it proposes a new frame of reference: alternative geographies and narratives, viewed from the perspective of women, grounded in values such as empathy, care, reflection, solidarity, and sensual joy. The exhibition’s narrative perfectly aligns with the character of Malta — a crossroads of cultures, geographies, and histories for thousands of years.

The Malta Biennale, supported by UNESCO, took place from March 13 to May 31, 2024, across 12 historic locations in Malta and Gozo. The main exhibition, “Insulaphilia,” curated by Sofia Baldi Bighi, was accompanied by 12 national pavilions and 8 thematic pavilions.
