Michał Cygan’s current work focuses on visualising the impact of climate change and the destructive role of human activity on the natural world. Flood 2 is inspired by real events—the devastating flood that struck Poland in 2024, destroying homes and infrastructure and forcing thousands to evacuate. Through the painting, Michał Cygan seeks to remind viewers of the increasing frequency of extreme weather phenomena such as torrential rainfall and sudden river surges—consequences of global climate change. Flood 2 serves as an artistic response to the climate crisis and its human toll.
Michał Cygan (b. 1989) graduated with distinction from the Faculty of Printmaking at the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice, specialising in Digital Printmaking under Professor Adam Romaniuk.
Cygan’s work has been exhibited widely in Poland and internationally. His paintings are included in both private and institutional collections, including the Krupa Art Foundation and Galeria Bielska BWA. He is a recipient of the Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage scholarship, and has been awarded numerous prizes, including the Special Prize at the 44th Bielska Jesień Biennale (2019), First Prize in the Leon Wyczółkowski National Painting Competition, and First Prize at the CBM Art Prize in Turin.
